National Western Animal Beating Competition

Hey everyone, It's that time of year again. Top animal beaters from across the land have descended on Denver and are beatin' up a cloud of shit-stink dust over our fair city. As one of the largest animal-beatin' get-togethers in the world, the National Western is your best chance to see the yester-year beating styles of every kind of livestock imaginable.
The most popular events, like Horse Chocking and Bull Strangling remain the crown jewel of the rodeo but are certainly not to be outdone by the other classics such as, Extreme Calf Fighting (ECF) and the always adorable, Kiddie-on-Kid hair-pulling fun of Sheep Dry Humping.You really have not seen a sporting event until you've seen a baby cow bound and beat till it pisses itself.

The Man's is a Musical Genius/Creep

You would think with constant movement Dan Deacon wouldn't fill out a sweatsuit as well as he does but then again we aren't there for the down times (as is the case with so many tubs of cheese balls). See this genius mess preform live at Rhinoceroplis on Saturday night and dance like your health depends on it.

Man Enough To Eat Frozen Yogurt While Looking At Art?

The opening is on Saturday, December 13th from 7pm- 11pm at the best local yogurt shop in town Kuulture Yogurt (1552 Larimer St. [in Writer' s Square, next to American Apperal] ) . The art show features work from local artists... Broox Pulford, 13ones, Lifted, Matt Weaver, and more. Fresh Beats from local Dj's Peter Black , Dj Cakes and a few special guests will keep you warm while yogurt and tasty beverages cool you down. There will also be a raffle and givea ways from Kuulture, xrocksthespot™, and DVLP Clothing. A big " thank you" to Colorado Wine Source for helping us make this happen.

Hopefully you can make it down to support some good local art, eats, fashion, and entertainment. It's sure to be a great time.

Early Voting

Do yourself a favor and go vote early. All this week you can vote at several locations around the city from 11am - 7pm. I just returned from casting my votes at the Weillington E. Web Municipal Office Building at 201 W. Colfax where I encountered zero lines! I even managed to fuck up my first ballot and got a new one with no hassle. Now I have a new sticker for my bike!

Daniel Richter: A Major Survey

If you don't know (German painter Daniel Richter has an incredible show entitled A Major Survey hanging at the Denver Art Museum) now you know.
Ricther's large canvases explore pop culture, police states, German history, punk rock, and super heros. Many of his works feature crude, brilliantly colored figures, who look as if they were being viewed through thermal binoculars (think Predator when he's tracking Schwarzenegger) set amongst haunting backgrounds. while still other works feature crisp dark outlines liken to that of pop comic artist Roy Lichtenstien. Truly awe inspiring work, this is the most bad ass exhibit to hit the DAM since the opening Radar show.






The exhibit runs until January 11th.

The GABF

A wise, retired, penny-pinching, beer loving friend of mine told me about this last year but I had already gotten tickets. The Great American Beer Festival , the largest in door event of it's kind, featuring 400 breweries and 1800 beers operates each year in Denver using the help of hundreds of volunteers. I just received a link to the volunteer sign up form. There are a few a different positions one can volunteer at; Set-up and Take-Down, Safety Team, Merchandising, Front Area/Lobby, Designated Driver Area (weak sauce), and by far the most coveted position, Brew Crew. As a member of this crew you are the one pouring (and from what I am told drinking) the one ounce shots of beer all night long. With tickets for Friday the 10th all ready 71% sold out this may be the only option left for procrastinators. Keep in mind you can always take the tickets you earn from volunteering and sell them on craigslist. Last year the were fetching over a Bill.

Too lazy to work for it, too broke to pay? another option is to buy the DD pass which still gets you the exact same tasting cup (for the root beer) as for the regular. the you just start drinking the good stuff regular beer. You can be asked to show the wrist band--which is a different color but I was told buy users of this method that it never happens. The DD ticket goes for $20.

Tour De Fat

Its that time of year again; the micro brew fuled bike jam known as Tour de Fat! Fat Tire may taste like leather bag full of hippie juice but what's not to love about a Colorado company representing bike first initiatives on a national scene? Head on over to City Park on September 13th at 9am.
You could chalk this whole thing up to a grandiose marketing scheme (because it is) but the Tour in its 6 years of existence has raised over eight-hundred-thousand dollars for non-profits and charities. Now that is something we can all drink to. This year profits are headed to: Bike Denver, Flight for Life, and The Derailleur Bicycle Collective.
So stop on by even if it requires you bring a bag full of a Beast. Visit the website for all the official rules and regulations.

Monster Track Eight. Saturday, August 9th

Go get your sick bike on with a bunch of kids dashin' for the cash in this five-dollar-winner-take-all pedal fest. Cool down with the premier of the new Monster Track video then put on your nice and tighties and head over to the culminating point of your bicycle tutelage; bike prom. Urban Assult

Need something to do Sunday July 27th? The Urban Assult Ride is coming to town! The two man (or women) scavanger hunt makes 6 stops around the Denver metro area. At the stops participents parktake in "zany shenanigans" before continuing on.

The whole thing sounds like a nuetered alley cat; old people cautiously riding on the sidewalk in full kits, Full suspension mountain bikes everywhere. The $60 entry fee (per person) is a huge Assult on the wallet. But don't worry, your're not gonna walk away empty handed; you'll get an organic cotton t-shirt, bike bell, drawstring back pack, water bottle, Rio Grande fajitas, New Belgium beer, Sweet Leaf Tea, donation to charity, and raffle ticket entries!

What is the deal with bike events and Mexican food anyway? Like your ass hasn't had enough abuse for one day. I think the smart way to go on this one would be; eat a Little Juan, go play kickball, then ride by the finish to see how many Fat Tires you can drink before they figure out you haven't paid a dime.

Front discs are not reccomended for breezy days which is pretty much always when you are on a bike.

Moonlight Calssic

In the realm of all night bike riding this may be the antithesis of the Cycle Jerk's Gang Bang (which took place a few months ago). But if you enjoy riding late-night, on bike clogged streets the Moonlight Classic may just be the ride you're looking for. Did I mention the clogged streets include small children, large women, and the elderly? Well, it does. But who hasn't been drunk around children and the elderly already?

The July 19th, 15-mile ride begins at 11:30pm but the shenanigans kick off much earlier at Civic Center Park (where the race also ends). There is a hefty $35 registration fee!! Your deep pockets will net you: a shirt, a taco, "snacks", "goodies", and a chance to win prizes. The money earned dose go to benefit the elderly so if you believe in karma you might want to pay. For those of you planning on checking out before your golden years do as I do; say fuck the shirt, fuck the taco, spend twenty on a bag a booze and get in where you fit in.

If you're only going to drive to work one day a year, tomorrow would be the day to do it. Of course then you'd miss out on all the free snacks. I know you love snacks.

Where's My Money?

Yesterday I vaguely remembered a commercial I saw Saturday night which spoke of the Colorado IRS having tons of money belonging to residents that was just waiting to be claimed. After a Google I came up with The Great Colorado Payback. I queried my name in "Personal Search For Unclaimed Property" and I'll be danged if the state isn't sittin' on a cool fifty-seven dollars and thirty-three cent of mine. Apparently when I walked out on my bus boy job at the Cheesecake Factory four years ago I never returned for my last paycheck. Way to go me from four years ago!!
